What do the Royal Monceau, the Peninsula Paris and the Paris Saint-Germain have in common ? Like many other prestigious Paris properties and symbols, they belong to Qatar, which probably explains why the State of Qatar is present in everyone’s mind as a wealthy country, associated with gas and oil.
However, it’s always interesting to go beyond the cliché. And that’s exactly what I got the chance to do recently, with a visit to the country. A trip that has definitely helped me get an accurate vision of Qatar through its capital city Doha, with the help of the Qatar Tourism Authority and QIA (QatarInternational Adventures).
Qu’est-ce que le Royal Monceau, le The Peninsula Paris et le Paris Saint-Germain ont en commun? Comme beaucoup d’autres prestigieuses propriétés et des symboles de Paris, ils appartiennent au Qatar, ce qui explique probablement pourquoi l’État du Qatar est présent dans l’esprit de la plupart d’entre nous comme un pays riche, associé au gaz et au pétrole.
Cependant, il est toujours intéressant d’aller au-delà du cliché. Et c’est exactement ce que j’ai eu la chance de faire récemment, en visitant ce fascinant pays. Un voyage qui m’a certainement aidé à obtenir une vision précise du Qatar à travers sa capitale Doha, avec l’aide de l’Office du tourisme du Qatar et de QIA (Qatar International Adventures).

A few days of exploration, from Doha’s traditional Souq Waqif to the Al Shakira mangroves ; with exceptional cultural highlights at the Museum of Islamic Arts, the Msheireb Enrichment Center and the Al Shaqab equestrian centre ; to understand how Qatar is transitioning from carbon economy to knowledge economy by unlocking human potential.
Plusieurs jours d’exploration, du traditionnel Souq Waqif de Doha aux mangroves Al Thakira; agrémentés de moments culturels d’exception avec le Musée des Arts de l’Islam, le Msheireb Enrichment Center et le centre équestre Al Shaqab; pour mieux comprendre comment le Qatar opère sa transition d’une économie de carbone à l’économie du savoir.

The trip started at Souq Waqif, renovated in 2006, where I stayed at one of the Souq Waqif Hotel Doha by AVANI boutique hotels. Souq Waqif is the perfect place to get immersed in an authentic taste of traditional commerce, architecture and culture. There, I visited a falcon breeder : hunting with falcons is a popular sport in Qatar, and the falcon is almost a national emblem of the country. The Souq is also home to a specialist falcon hospital. Quite surprising !
Mon séjour a commencé au Souq Waqif, rénové en 2006, où je suis descendu dans l’un des boutique hotels AVANI. Le Souq Waqif est le point de départ idéal pour se plonger dans le Qatar authentique, entre commerce traditionnel, architecture et culture. Là, j’ai rendu visite à un éleveur de faucon: la chasse au faucon est un sport populaire au Qatar, et le faucon est presque un emblème national du pays. Le Souq abrite également… Un hôpital pour les faucons… Plutôt surprenant, mais voilà qui donne le ton sur les moyens dont dispose le pays.

Souq Waif offers a wide range of restaurants, such as Parisa : a Persian restaurant entirely decorated with fine materials from Iran. The food there was simply delicious !
Souq Waqif propose un large éventail de restaurants, tels que Parisa: un restaurant persan entièrement décoré avec des matériaux en provenance d’Iran. La nourriture y est tout simplement délicieuse !

Among the many good surprises Qatar has to offer, one is the variety of landscape. Just a few steps away from Souq Waqif, I was literally amazed by the Corniche, a waterfront promenade around the Doha Bay, offering spectacular views of the
city skyline on the other side of the Bay – where traditional wooden dhows evoke Qatar’s past. That day, I was taken out of the city, approximately 60 kilometers north of Doha, to the city of Al Khor and the Al Thakira mangroves…
What a contrast between the desert landscape we drove through, and the natural greenery the mangroves had to offer !
The best part definitely was the exploration of the mangroves by kayak ; although a little hard sometimes 😉

A quelques pas de Souq Waqif, j’ai été littéralement stupéfait par la Corniche, une promenade de front de mer autour de la baie de Doha, offrant des vues spectaculaires sur les toits de la ville de l’autre côté de la baie – où les boutres traditionnels en bois évoquent le passé du pays. Closer to what I had imagined the Qatar landscapes to be like, but none the less spectacular, was my dune bashing adventure. Our desert safari trip was in two steps : first, we drove from downtown Doha to the sealine beach, where the car tires were deflated before starting the actual dune bashing. It was not the first time for me, but this time I was sitting in the front of the car… So many emotions, coupled with beautiful views conveying a sensation of freedom and infinite space ! The dune bashing adventure ended up in Khor Al-Adaid area, also known as the ‘Inland Sea’, located in the south-east of Qatar. On the horizon, we could see Saudi Arabia !
Plus près de l’idée que je m’étais fait des paysages du Qatar, mais pas moins spectaculaire, l’expérience “dune bashing”. Ce safari dans le désert s’est déroulé en deux étapes: d’abord, du centre-ville de Doha à la plage “sealine”, où les pneus des voitures ont été dégonflés avant de réellement entamer le dune bashing. Ce n’était pas la première fois pour moi, mais cette fois j’étais installé à l’avant de la voiture … Tant d’émotions, couplées avec de belles vues qui offraient une sensation de liberté et d’espace infini! Cette aventure s’est terminée dans la région de Khor Al-Adaid, également connue sous le nom «mer intérieure», située dans le sud-est du Qatar. A l’horizon, on pouvait apercevoir l’Arabie Saoudite!

During my trip to Doha, I also stayed at the Sharq Village & Spa hotel. What I loved about this hotel was its location by the sea, with its own private – and all natural – beach, and of course a large-than-life pool.
Au cours de mon voyage à Doha, j’ai également séjourné à l’hôtel Sharq Village & Spa. Ce que j’ai apprécié dans cet hôtel était bien sûr son emplacement en bord de mer, avec sa plage privée et, bien sûr, une immense piscine.

Qataris and expats in Doha have plenty of amazing places for their entertainment, and the W Doha Hotel is also one of them. There, the cool crowds can enjoy a drink at the outdoor Wahm Lounge while listening to cool sounds by the house DJ. The W Hotel also offers an array of food options, and I have to say the Spice Market restaurant was one of the food highlights of my trip, with deliciously revisited south-east asian food.
Les Qataris et les expatriés à Doha ont beaucoup d’endroits pour faire la fête, et le W Doha Hôtel y figure en bonne place. Les branchés peuvent y prendre un verre au Wahm Lounge tout en écoutant les sons du DJ maison. L’Hôtel W offre également un éventail d’options de restauration, et je dois dire que le restaurant Spice Market a été l’un des points “food” forts mon voyage, avec sa cuisine asiatique du sud-est délicieusement revisitée.

If the nightlife does not disappoint in Qatar, as previously mentioned, I loved getting a chance to get deeper into the culture and history of the country, as well as the plans for its future, in places such as the Museum of Islamic Arts and the Msheireb Enrichment Center.
Si la vie nocturne ne déçoit pas au Qatar, j’ai également beaucoup apprécié en apprendre plus sur la culture et l’histoire du pays, ainsi que sur ses projets d’avenir, en visitant les incontournables Musée des arts islamiques et Msheireb Enrichment Center.

The most suprising discovery, however, definitely was the Al Shaqab equestrian centre. An unbelievable complex dedicated to the Arabian horse breed : nearly 1,000,000 square meters of stables, arenas, and, what surprised me the most, a state of the art air conditioned Equine Hydrotherapy and Exercise Unit, including a swimming pool, equine jacuzzi and dry treadmill.
La découverte la plus surprenante, cependant, aura sans doute été le centre équestre Al Shaqab. Un complexe incroyable dédié aux pur-sangs arabes: près de 1.000.000 de mètres carrés d’écuries, d’arènas, et, ce qui m’a le plus surpris, une unité d’exercice et d’hydrothérapie à la pointe de la technologie, offrant même piscine, jacuzzi, tapis de course, etc…

And when I thought my trip to Qatar had come to an end, ready to board my flight back to Paris, I was delighted to learn that I was about to fly on Qatar Airways’ business class. I could not have thought of a better way to conclude such an amazing experience. Clearly, Qatar and the Qatar Tourism Authority know how to treat their guests !
Et alors que je pensais que mon voyage au Qatar avait pris fin, prêt à prendre mon vol de retour vers Paris, j’ai découvert que celui-ci se ferait en business class avec Qatar Airways. Je n’aurais pas imaginé une meilleure façon de conclure une telle expérience. De toute évidence, le Qatar et le Qatar Tourism Authority savent comment traiter les visiteurs !
