Chanel flies us to the moon with the new J12 Moonphase

The J12 Moonphase – shot with my Leica

What if Chanel plucked the moon from the skies ? This is how Chanel introduced its new watch collection yesterday : the J12 Moonphase. After celebrating the 10th anniversary of the J12 White sooner this year, and recently dedicating a pop-up store to the Première watch, Chanel once again demonstrates its unparalleled creativity in watchmaking.

The J12 Moonphase collection

With the Moonphase, Chanel succeeds in re-inventing the J12 – the first watch icon of the 21st century that transformed high-tech ceramic into a precious material – in quite a poetic way… With the Moonphase, Chanel’s emblematic J12 goes higher up into deep space, to the heart of a swarm of comets, and onwards to the moon star : a journey combining technical excellence and highly refined design, giving birth to a moon phase watch.

I got to try the Chanel J12 Moonphase:  bezel set with 54 diamonds (~1.42ct), opaline
guilloché dial set with 63 diamonds (~0.34 ct) and an aventurine counter

Chanel brings a real innovation with this complication watch : unlike classic moon phase watches where the phases appear through an aperture, those of the J12 Moonphase are displayed on a deep-blue aventurine disc.

Sparkling like a summer night – to keep the poetry on – the disc features the four main phases of the moon and is adorned with a little serpentine hand in polished steel. A subtle distinction, the date is indicated by a central hand poetically tipped with the shape of a crescent moon…

Definitely not your average moon phase watch, the J12 Moonphase watch opens a new chapter in the Chanel watchmaker saga. In black or white high-tech ceramic, set with diamonds or in a jewelry version in titanium ceramic, the J12 Moonphase concentrates in its genes all the classic power of seduction and creative spirit of Chanel.
For sure, the J12 Moonphase would certainly have appealed to Mademoiselle Chanel, whose fascination for the stars has never been a mystery.
 Bravo Chanel !
