Chanel will be one of the 8 official
High Jewelry Maisons to introduce exceptionnal creations at the upcoming Paris
2014 Biennale, from 11th to 21st September.
Like Chaumet and a few
other Maisons, Chanel introduced part of their creations for the Biennale during
the last Paris couture week, earlier in July. The theme ? « Café
Society », that I had the privilege to preview and shoot.
Chanel’s « Café
Society » is a tribute to this movement which, in the beginning of the
20th century, gathered a mix of aristocrats, bourgeoisie, socialites, poets and
musicians who intermingled at dinners, balls, concerts, openings and vibrant
artistic encounters. From Paris to Venice, the Riviera and Long Island, their
lives resembled a long voyage in search of a new kind of beauty that would
shake up all convictions.
Gabrielle Chanel, along
with Cocteau, Stravinsky and Picasso, belonged to the Café Society, which
ultimately gave birth to an aesthetic nourished on audacity and eccentricity,
rebelling against puritan and bourgeois conventions.
The “Café Society” high
jewelery collection is a celebration of this “Tout Paris on an international
scale” : it breaks away from all the icons’ classic references to become a
manifesto, freed from codes and the shackles of tradition.
