One thing seems to be sure for Moynat in 2015: the French Maison, celebrating its 165th anniversary, is set to keep surprising us with unexpected news and one-of-a-kind creations. The latest ? A special order for none other than Chaumet, the Parisian jeweler.
Inspired by 1919 archives, the Place Vendôme jeweler has created a unique, high jewelry diamond necklace crafted at its atelier: it required 156 brilliant cut diamonds of 30 carats and 70 pear-cut diamonds of 60 carats.
To host this jewel, Moynat’s artistic director Ramesh Nair has once again pushed his own boundaries, creating a trunk that took over 500 hours to realise, using complex techniques, including moulding panels of wood as well as glass to achieve the Moynat shape.
This complex trunk incorporates three curved sides in homage not only to Moynat’s signature curved trunks, but also as an echo of the faceted stones. The frame of the trunk is in poplar and apple wood, sheathed in vegetal tanned leather that matches Chaumet’s signature “lumière” colour, continuing the Moynat tradition of personalised colour matching. The mechanism to open the trunk is articulated so that the two sides cantilever sideways to reveal a curved glass vitrine that contains the necklace. As the box opens, the glass vitrine lights up automatically.
The closures and metallic elements used for this trunk have been specially designed and hand tooled to Moynat specifications. The carrying handles have been designed fit flush with the trunk, maintaining the smooth line of the trunk’s contours.
